Speed up your old computer by disabling the unnoticeable designs. Start > (right click and select properties) Computer > (For vista select [Advanced System Settings] on the left) Navigate to the advanced tab > Performance: Settings > Select best performance. Note: this will remove the styling of your version of windows. You may want to keep the [Use visual styles on windows and buttons] checked on.

A quick tip to control your startup applications. Start > Run > (type in) msconfig then navigate to that startup tab and select the programs you would like to run at startup.
